Title: The Fear Rating: PG Word Count: 159 Pairing: Alanna/Jonathan Round/Fight: 1A Summary: Set during In the Hand of the Goddess, after Alanna’s fall through the ice. Warnings: Description of death/near-death experience.
She was reluctant to go on the ice again. The drag of ice-cold water invaded her dreams as she relived that moment over and over, pain bursting from her chest and throat, the surface always barely out of reach. Often she would wake in the night, shivering in a cold sweat, sheets tangled about her feet, a cool breeze wafting in from the open shutters. If she ever called out in her sleep, Jon never mentioned it.
“You don’t have to do this.” He had found her trying to sneak out, skates dangling from a gloved hand. “You don’t have to prove anything to anyone.” “I’m not stupid,” she snapped, cheeks heating. She opened her mouth to go on, to say I have to prove it to myself, but somehow the words wouldn’t come. She swallowed. “Fears can be conquered.” Jon sighed. There was no pity in his expression, at least. “Hold on,” he said. “I’ll get my skates.”

Mm, love the characterisation. Alanna's always been proving herself. I wonder if as an adult, she ever stopped having to do so.

This feels like a missing snippet of the books. Alanna's desire to test her own boundaries is the most remakrable thing about her.

Wonderful quick look into their relationship; I like how, even from just this much about them, that you can tell how deep and long their friendship is.

Seconding all the love for the characterisation. This fic is very well characterised and I love the handle you've got on their friendship, especially Jon's exasperation at the end as he gets his own pair of skates.
