Title: Retrospective Rating: G Word Count: 129 Pairing: Alanna/Jonathan Round/Fight: 1A Summary: What ifs.
There is a stillness around them, for once, all the children herded away, the palace servants gone, no courtiers looking for an audience. She can feel the way that Jon is looking at her, can almost predict the question before he asks it.
Even without the crown, he looks like a king. For a moment he rubs his chin, then says, “If I hadn’t been the prince, would you have accepted? That day in the desert?”
As if she hadn’t played those scenes over and over in her head, searching for the point where it started to go wrong, where it could have been fixed. She had not looked back since George. And even if she did know the answer, there was only one answer that she could give.

A striking piece. So much so that the poignancy - that realism - and the sliver of hope in this setting are two warring forces, yet still perfectly harmonious.

I love this! It's a bit stark, the way you've described everything, but that just adds to the atmosphere.
I might be the only one, but you've left me just enough space between the lines of this to wonder if Jon is talking to Alanna-the-Champion, married to George, or Alanna-his-Queen, with a discreet -non-reference to a George related incident...
Ambiguity. I love it. Either way, beautiful fic!

I love this fic--it's very striking, and there's something very poetic about the sparsity of your words, and how carefully you've used them.
