SMACKDOWN 2013 Guidelines
What is SMACKDOWN?
The best way to describe SMACKDOWN is a competitive avalanche of fanfiction. The competition starts with eight sets of competitors. Competitors are set against each other in ‘fights’ where they score points based on the amount of fanfiction written about them by their supporters. At closing, the points are tallied up, and the couple with the most points progresses to the next round. This continues so that we go from eight competitors in Round 1, to four in Round 2, and down to two in the Final, with the winning couple from that fight crowned the winners. When is SMACKDOWN?
SMACKDOWN will hold one fight per week between 8 April and 2 June. Nominations and voting: 11 to 28 March Announcement of draws: 1 April Round 1 Fights A to D: 8 April to 5 May Semifinals A and B: 6 to 19 May Third place fight: 20 to 26 May SMACKDOWN Final: 27 May to 2 June The standard opening and closing times for fights will be posted closer to SMACKDOWN's first fight. Who competes in SMACKDOWN?
Eight couples will compete in SMACKDOWN, with a mix of couples across universes and series. This year, all eight couples will be voted in by the board. How do the points work?
Points will no longer be awarded on the basis of one point for one drabble. To make things interesting, point tallies will now reflect length of the entry (up to 500 words). Each drabble will be awarded points based on the following system: - First 100 words: 1 point - 200 to 500 words: 1 additional point for every additional 100 words - Over 500 words: no additional points This means If you write a 105 word drabble, you will be awarded 1 point; If you write a 320 word fic, you will be awarded 3 points - and so on! Referees will mark points in the subject line of each fic in the last 48 hours of the fight. The points will be tallied up at close, with the winner announced shortly thereafter. What are the guidelines for fic?
1. You can post your fic anytime during the SMACKDOWN competition, once the fight is open, until the Judges close the fight. 2. Drabbles must be at least 100 words long to count. Drabbles will be randomly checked for word count. The word count must always be displayed in the fic information. Drabbles under the limit will be disqualified. 3. Drabbles must be new content, composed by you. Old fics cannot be used, reworked or adapted. Sequels are acceptable. Plagiarism is not. If your story reworks old content or fic it will be disqualified. 4. Every drabble must stand alone as a story. Continuations or series are fine, but you can’t take a longer story and cut it into five incoherent drabbles. If your story is nonsensical or doesn’t function as a stand alone it will be disqualified. 5. Drabbles must examine, touch on or refer to the relationship of the couple they are supporting. The relationship can be platonic (i.e. friendship) or romantic. If a referee determines your fic to not have any/enough relevance to the couple it will be disqualified. 6. Drabbles must maintain a minimum quality level. That means very few spelling/grammar mistakes, no bashing other couples/characters, and a decent style of writing. You will be directed by a Referee or a Moderator to revise your story if it convenes this requirement and must correct it by closing or your fic will be disqualified. If you post it in the last day of the competition (due to the lack of time available to check stories) it will automatically be disqualified. 7. All Drabbles MUST follow the posting requirements below (including appropriate ratings): Thread Title:
AB R1: Title, Rating (The A and B are the first initials of your couple’s names, R1 signifies the round) Post Content:
Title: Rating: Word Count: Pairing: Round/Fight: (e.g. 1/A) Summary: (including warnings) *fic* Are they the only rules?
No. Normal Goldenlake rules apply – if you spam, troll, flame or carry on in an inappropriate manner you will be booted from Goldenlake for the remainder of SMACKDOWN (i.e. until June). This includes duplicate account creation to throw polls. Who are the Referees and what do they do?
The Referees are senior staff members who work on a rotating roster of fights. They close fights, tally the scores, announce the winners (via fic!) and settle any issues that may arise. Referees are supported by moderators who check that all fics meet the requirements above, and direct any serious rule-breaking to them. Is SMACKDOWN just writing?
Not at all. SMACKDOWN tends to spread all over the board, from the Tortall/Emelan/Provost’s Dog discussion, to writing boards, fanart, signatures and even group chats. There will also be plenty of discussion and cheering going on in the Events forum. Is there a twist?
There is always a twist...

Yay! I'm glad to find out how this works. Can we crosspost while the challenge is on?

Duuuuude! I'm so excited for this, but also slightly terrified. I already can't decide what pairings I want or what strategy to use. D:

Yay! I'm glad to find out how this works. Can we crosspost while the challenge is on? What do you mean? As in posting fics offsite?

Crossposting is not allowed during the rounds. You can only crosspost after the particular round is finished and the winners have been announced. We will have dedicated flood days for posting on ff.net and TKO as well at several points throughout SMACKDOWN as well.

Ooh, this sounds exciting! I've never participated before, so I might just watch from the sidelines. Or maybe not. It all sounds so tempting!

IT'S BACK! I am so excited. I especially like this rule change:
Points will no longer be awarded on the basis of one point for one drabble. To make things interesting, point tallies will now reflect length of the entry (up to 500 words).

I've never participated before, so I might just watch from the sidelines. Or maybe not. It all sounds so tempting! That's what I thought when my first big Goldenlake event came around (Decathlon) and then I got sucked into participating with only about 10 days to go because it looked like so much fun!! So be prepared to be suckered into SMACKDOWN

EPIC! Only, I'm in Europe during SMACKDOWN this year, so I suspect I shall be merely a spectator.

If we nominate a three- or foursome, do all characters from the pairing have to be in each drabble? Also, can drabbles be platonic and if so, can we specify that in our nomination?

If we nominate a three- or foursome, do all characters from the pairing have to be in each drabble? Also, can drabbles be platonic and if so, can we specify that in our nomination? If you nominate a three/foursome (and they make it through to SMACKDOWN) all characters will have to be in each drabble submitted for that pairing. They don't have to all romantically involved, but they all have to be in the fic and the fic has to be about the three/foursome's relationship. The interpretation of any pairings that make it through is up to the authors who write for them. You cannot specify that you are nominating a platonic couple, but you can nominate the couple and (if they make it through) write platonic fic for them in SMACKDOWN.

One more question, sorry! We can nominate biological sibling or parent-child couples, can't we?

On the nominations thread, it says we can "campaign" for a pairing. How would we go about that? (What no I'm not up to anything )

For the moment, you can create a thread in the Events forum with the team pairing in the title. We will have a dedicated campaigning/cheering board open in the coming weeks.

That'll be fun. Just clarifying, all the fic for SMACKDOWN is drabbles, right?
