Title: spring awakening Rating: G Prompt: #76 new beginnings Summary: Ever since he was a small boy, Roald had looked forward to these days.
It had long been tradition for royal pages to reside in the pages’ wing of the palace, but for the very first time, Roald regretted the fact. Young buds were visible on the tree that stood outside his window, and the air had the distinct smell of spring. For a moment he considered closing the shutters again, but thought better of it. There was nothing he could do to prevent the passage of time.
“Roald, are you coming?” asked Yancen, knocking on his open door. He was not wearing his harness, as all senior pages were required to; it was probably being adjusted for the third time. It was another reminder that they were growing up. Soon, they would be squires.
Ever since he was a small boy, Roald had looked forward to these days, but now that he was here, living them, he just wanted to hold on. There were reasons for that, he knew, covered up fears about duty and things he didn’t dare think of. Things that, one day, would not wait until a coming spring.
There were many things he had to face in the future, yet that ought not stop him from living until he got there.
“A minute,” Roald said, laughing at the other boy’s impatience. He grabbed his harness from the bed and shrugged into it, ushering Yancen out and closing the door behind them.

Lovely!! I really appreciated the maturity you've given roald here; it fit so well with his character! Lovely descriptions as well, especially the 'young buds...' and 'covered up fears...' lines. Thanks for sharing this em!

This is such a wonderful little glimpse into Roald's character. He's so different from Jonathan at that age, and you've done a marvelous job portraying that. I love how he comes across as a little sentimental and reluctant to grow up, because he isn't quite ready for all the responsibilities that await him, especially when he's got kingship in his future as well as knighthood.

Thanks everyone! I do love how different Roald is from Jon, and it's quite fun to imagine how he experienced page training.
