Title: Designs Rating: G Word Count: 173 Summary: He loved her too much to live on without her.
Jonathan let out a long breath as the carriage rattled to a stop, and steeled himself for what would come next: the well-meaning enquiries about his health, the sympathy. The quiet murmurs when his back was turned. He loved her too much to live on without her.
The walk through the palace corridors and to the receiving room was tense. He found himself wiping sweaty palms on the hem of his tunic; at least the black material meant that no stains would be left behind. A small consolation.
Roger wore no crown, though his attire spoke of unreserved wealth. He took Jonathan’s hand, then swept him into a brief hug before Jonathan could even consider whether he should bow or kneel.
The king’s smile was burdened with grief. “Let’s have you fed and settled. Then we can worry about...the rest.”
Jonathan nodded and allowed himself to be led away. Here, in Corus—in the palace itself—the shortened line between them felt even more tenuous.
He was one step closer to the throne.
