Summary: Sometimes promises are made when future change is unthinkable.
(Mattes tried to take it well. He tried really, really hard not to sound like a little girl.) “But you said we’d be partners forever.”
(…But it kind of just slipped out.)
Clary, gods bless her, held off from teasing him just this once. Instead, she rested her head against his shoulder in a rare display of affection – and, he suspected, exhaustion. “I thought I meant it when I said it,” she murmured. “At least…I think I childishly thought we would both somehow just decide at the same time when we were getting too old for it.”
“I’m older than you, and I’m not too old for it.” (He really didn’t mean to sound like a pouting toddler.)
“I know,” she said softly. “I admire your strength, both of body and heart.”
Mattes swallowed hard. “Taking the desk job doesn’t make you weak.”
“Thank you.” Clary sighed. “I’ll miss you.”
“You’ll see me every day while you bark orders from behind that big desk.” He shifted his head and gave her a suspicious look. “How did you flip this conversation around so quickly? You’re supposed to be comforting me.”
Clary elbowed him. “You’ll be just fine with Cooper.” She rested her head back against him. “Make sure you look after her, alright? I didn’t go through all that training her just to-“
“Cut it off, you know I know you’re a big softie where she’s concerned.” Mattes smiled to himself as he pictured the scowl he knew was on her face. “Besides, shouldn’t you be more worried about her looking after me?”
“Your brawn and experience makes up for your lack of common sense.”
“Now you’re sounding more like my Clary.” Mattes tucked an arm around her. “I promise I won’t let either of you down.”
