Title: Somewhere to Be Rating: G Team: Provost's Dog/Short Stories Prompt: Differences Word Count: 204 Summary (and any Warnings): Lindri cares more for dragons than well-meant advice. Notes: Based on the short story "Plain Magic" ________________________________________
“You’re one more visitor we don’t need,” the headman told me, “with all these folk coming down through the pass.”
I just kept on embroidering. “Why are so many people coming south?”
The man sighed. “Have you no ears? There’s a dragon, they say, destroying the towns.”
I had seen the people coming through the town on carts stacked high with belongings, and I had heard the rumors of a dragon but had been reluctant to believe them. “Destroying with flame?” I asked.
“Of course,” the headman said. “How else? Go back the way you came, peddler. Going north beyond here’s no good.” He walked away.
I sat and listened to the murmurs in the square for the rest of the day as I embroidered. Bronze, as long as three bulls, burning towns to the ground – that was how the people described the dragon.
Few dragons were as long as three bulls, and those that were wouldn’t be lost, as this one surely must be, to have come so far south of the mountains. But flaming? Dragons only flamed when they were ill.
I packed my cart and headed north. A lost dragon, particularly an ill one, needed to be returned to its home.

Plain Magic is my favourite of Tammy's short stories, and I think you've captured the feel of it so well. Lindri is so wonderfully matter-of-fact in this. Great fic!

I just adore the matter of fact conclusion to this. No problem too big, scaly, or fire-breathing!

You've shown her matter-of-fact determination really well.
