Title: Escalation
Rating: PG
Prompt: mistakes aren't always regrets
Summary: Not that it makes any difference. This is not a perfect world.
They avoid each other; the space of the room is small and confining, no longer urgent and pressing, but too full of consequences and guilt. It's enough to make a man babble. Luckily, he never was the type.
Thom averts his eyes as the young knight dresses, out of politeness, perhaps, more than anything else. The events of the previous night are still heavy under his skin; he feels too-old, and weighed down. It was a relief, during, but reality is pulling at him once again, making demands. He's rushing towards an end that can't be prevented. It's too late for that.
Looking back, it's too late for a great many things.
"How long have you known," says Alex, ducking his head as he ties the cords of his shirt. Thom watches him for a moment, imagines that dark hair matted with blood. He doesn't fancy himself a seer, but some futures are more obvious than others.
"I've always known about Roger," he says, because for all his imagined-wit, the need to be clever, avoiding the problem does neither of them any favours. "Since before. Before I even met him."
"Your sister."
Thom shrugs. He doesn't react to the dislike in Alex's voice; Alanna knows what she has done, and that some men will never forgive her for what should have remained a foolish dream.
"It's too late, now," Thom continues. "Has been for a long time. There's nothing to be done."
"You'd stop him if you could?"
"You wouldn't?"
The look Alex shoots him is dark, yet even that cannot dissuade him from the feelings that still linger from the night before. Thom smiles, though it's probably an ugly thing. "No, you wouldn't. Revenge is a hard road. But in a perfect world...I think you would try."
A perfect world without his sister. A world where Tirragen is still loyal and strong and favoured. The sickness had not been sent. Thom would have been - what? Not that it makes any difference. This is not a perfect world.
"And to try would be enough?" asks Alex.
"It would to some."
