When she was introduced she showed no expression. She had no smile for her husband-to-be or laugh at his half witted jokes. She was impassive, even less expressive than he had expected.
Neither did she look as expected. Though she wore traditional kimonos, rather than Tortallian skirts, her coloration was distinctly of the midlands. Her stature, too, was impressive, tall and wide, built like the warrior she was rumored to be.
But Roland still felt drawn to her, especially as he learned more of her. Her kindness. Her talent. Her humor. She was strong and very much the woman he needed in his life.
It was not the marriage he had expected, but slowly, he learned to love the Yamani girl with her Tortallian exterior. When she died years later, the slight, dark daughter of the Emperor seemed very different.
