Series: Imperial
Title: Inherited Damage
Rating: PG
Event: AU Hammer Throw
Word Count: 370 words.
Summary: Modern AU based upon Emperor Mage’s ending, if Carthak and Tortall were businesses.
It didn’t matter that Kaddar had been head of the Human Resources department at the time. Or that his deputy CEO position was, as his uncle frequently told him, out of familial obligation and a hereditary position that meant that he got the title and not the bother of any of the duties. Mostly by Ozorne’s choice.
It didn’t matter that his uncle now sat in jail for international fraud after making the wrong moves on a personal assistant (his former and now heavily estranged business partner’s personal assistant, no less) and in retaliation she had suggested to the tax department that they pay closer attention to Carthak Corporation’s finances.
It didn’t matter that Carthak Corporation was now a shell of what it once was and facing bankruptcy despite all the blood, sweat and tears he had put in to rebuild his company.
None of that did matter as he took the empty chair at the long table in the conference room at Conte Enterprises. Glancing across the familiar blank faces of the people who had been his uncle’s rivals for years and avoiding the look of sympathy Daine Sarrasri gave him (he didn’t blame her, but it was an uncomfortable reminder all the same), he stares at the far end of the table, where the CEO sits. His wife sits next to him, and their eldest son and daughter to either side and he notices that neither of them have their blank look practiced yet, the son looks calmly back at him while the daughter gives him a look of faint disdain, and he brings himself back to look at Jonathan Conte.
“I think we all know the reasons why we are attending this meeting today, so we may as well begin.” Conte says, and looks directly back at him, keeping his poker-face intact.
It does matter. This is his career and his hobby and his financial situation for the rest of his life and his reputation but he really hopes this merger goes ahead even if he ends up being stuck in the mailroom at this company for the rest of his life.
It does matter, and he can only hope that the dice rolls in his favour.
