“Sometimes I wish we could go to my rooms instead,” Thayet said and tapped the mattress. Her other hand on Gary’s bare chest, she looked up at him smiled. He readjusted, turning onto his side and propping his head up with his arm. “Why? Is my bedding not good enough for Your Highness?” he joked.
Thayet chuckled and retorted, “My sheets are better.” She paused, then dropped her smile. “I’m not exactly sure why. I just, I guess this—us—would feel realer.” Gary started to open her mouth but she interrupted, “I know we can’t. I know, dear.”
“If you want to stop, we can,” Gary said. “I don’t want to make you uncomfortable.”
Thayet shook her head. “I don’t like lying to Jon, I can’t imagine you do either. You’re both so close...” Gary nodded, urging her to go on. “But to stop, I think my marriage would suffer more.” She stiffened for a moment. “Unless you want to.”
“Of course not. You know how I feel for you.”
Thayet snuggled against him, and tried to drop Jonathan from her mind. “Good. Will you tell me about when you first met me?”
Gary chuckled. “I must have told that story dozens of times.” But, when Thayet did not relent, he caved. “Well, I thought you were the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen.” He continued to talk about her flowing dress, the way the light made her cheekbones glow, and how her infallible humor kept him laughing. “But the whole night you were standing so close to Jon. I thought you’d become queen and never look back.”
Thayet smiled, then sighed and Gary looked at her questioningly. “Jon never talks like that anymore,” she explained. “He’s all business.”
“Being king is a hard job.” He kissed her cheek. “But so is being queen. You know that whenever you need cheering up you can come to me.”
Thayet touched his cheek with the back of her hand in response. “Now, if we could pick a brighter topic,” she said and reached up to give him a quick kiss.
“Do we have to talk at all?” Gary asked. Thayet laughed and kissed him again, lingering this time. She pulled back, just slightly and cocked her head to the right. “I’d prefer not to,” she murmured, and Gary grinned.
