Series: We the Kings Title: Not What I Wanted Rating: G Event: AU Hammer Throw Words: 217 Summary: When no one else would Gary accepted Kel as his squire, but it is not exactly what either wanted.
:::
“How is Lord Raoul as a knight master?” Kel asked Owen over dinner, his first since his return that morning, in the Mess Hall.
“S’good,” he replied with a mouthful of potatoes. Owen swallowed and wiped his mouth. “He’s nice, and strong. I’m really learning how to fight bandits!”
Kel smiled. “That’s wonderful.”
Owen returned the smile, but it began to falter. “And Sir Gary?” he asked hesitantly.
“He’s very...smart.” She paused, looking for the right words. “And kind,” she quickly added.
Owen nodded. “Are you learning lots?”
“Oh, yes,” Kel lied, her disappointed hid behind a tight smile, “It’s all very interesting.”
:::
“It’s good to have you back, old man,” Gary said as he embraced Raoul.
Raoul chuckled. “You can’t call me that until you accept that you are one yourself.”
Gary smiled. “How were your travels?”
“Fine enough. Owen misses the border though. You’d think every ounce of his happiness comes from fighting bandits.” Raoul paused and smiled. “How is Kel doing?”
“To be honest, I’m not sure,” he said. “Well enough, I suppose. I’m not exactly the knight master she wanted.”
Raoul nodded. “Still, it was nice of you to take her on.” When Gary remained silent he continued, “You’ll offer her guidance for some time, and then she will find her own way.”

Oh, I like the perspective. The interaction between the characters all seem spot on!

What a nice twist on the canon! Such beautiful and believeable interaction between Owen & Kel and Gary & Raoul
