She is pretty and delicate and tranquil, soft and sweet, the center of attention. Her grip is like iron when she dances with him, though, and her bell like laugh is raucous in his ears.
Gareth swallows hard. Under lock and key, his heart beats painfully.
Mother doesn’t need to beg for him to know that he cannot have a choice. Father looks at him levelly, arm around Mother’s waist, and it hits Gareth like a punch in the gut: he will never have what they have.
How dare they ask this of him?
But he nods and he bows and he offers her his arm even though she is far too concerned with good breeding and manners and whatever else it is that girls are supposed to be learning these days.
She is vicious and cold and calculating underneath the lace and the ribbons, things that worry Gareth, but it’s too late now.
Her small, soft smile might as well have been a fierce grin of triumph; she clutches at his arm possessively and Gareth pastes on a bland smile for their audience.
Sabine vows fealty to him again, him and his betrothed and his heirs, but only for his sake. Never hers. Behind her fan and impassive façade, her lip curls just the slightest in contempt.
And that, Gareth thinks emotionlessly as they kneel before the Mithran priest, is that.
