Series: We the Kings
Title: Connecting
Rating: G
Event: Lighthearted Long Jump
Words: 342
Summary: Gary misses his own children more than he realizes.
:::
Gary, flanked by Jonathan’s men, walked through the streets of Port Legann. He walked slowly, far more patiently than he would in the palace, and watched the passerby, nodding whenever he made eye contact. There was so much to see, so many people to acknowledge in the regal, official manner as one of King Jonathan’s trusted advisors. But he could tell the soldiers were itching for a cool, off-duty drink and becoming rather impatient with their slow pace, though their training hid it well.
Gary smiled particularly widely as he noticed a young boy, adding a small wave to his regular greeting. The boy could be no more than five, yet he stood alone with no mother or sibling in sight. Gary glanced at the man to his right, noticing drops of sweat sliding from beneath his helmet. But, because children really did fascinate Gary (and because Gary himself was not wearing a heavy armor, but rather a light tunic) he walked to the side of the road and crouched before the boy.
“Is your mama nearby?” Gary asked, his eyes twinkling.
The boy shook his head. “She ‘ent to buy some dinner,” he said. He sucked his thumb once, then quickly rubbed it on his breeches, embarrassed. “She’ll be ‘ack soon. She said stay ‘ere.”
Gary nodded. “You take good care of yourself, my young gentleman!” He turned back to the street, but the little boy cried out.
“Is the palace as beautiful as they say it is?” Gary crouched again, looking into the boy’s eyes, which seemed both larger and bluer than before.
“Every bit,” he said softly. “Perhaps one day you will come visit, and I will show you all my favorite places.”
“Really?” he asked, and Gary nodded and patted him on the head. “Be good and wait for your mother, he said, and regained the soldiers.
He expected them to be almost shaking with anger (though subtly, of course, so perhaps a wobble of annoyance) but the men seemed oddly touched. “Onward?” Gary asked, and they walked.
