Title: Everything Looks Smaller From Here
Rating: PG
Event: 4x100 “What If” Relay
Word Count: 400
Summary: What would’ve happened if Kel had been the animal that a page or squire had to rescue?
“Faster, Page Peachblossom, or all the best mounts will be taken,” the training master said sternly when the boy trudged slowly to the stables.
Peachblossom snorted. As if these other boys knew anything about good horses.
But apparently they did. By the time he reached the stalls, the best horses were already claimed. All that were left were an old mare who looked skittish and a large, sturdy one who looked immovable.
“Keladry’s never turned away from a good fight,” Stefan said, “and she’s as patient as can be.”
Patient? People needed patience to deal with Peachblossom.
He chose her.
“This dog seems to have taken a liking to us,” Lord Wyldon told the pages, when they noticed Kel sitting quietly next to the training master the first morning of their camping trip.
Neal nearly choked on his breakfast, and Jump had to pound his back.
“At least she’s smart enough to toady up to him,” Merric said. “She’s a clever pup.”
Jump sighed as he finished his breakfast. He was still hungry – but Lord Wyldon tossed him another piece of bacon. The other pages cheered when he caught it in his mouth, but the knight shook his head, irritated.
“You should’ve cried for help,” Crown scolded Lalasa. She knew the maid needed comfort, but she also needed to be reminded what to do in case someone cornered her again.
“It’s all right, really,” Lalasa insisted. “The birds helped – Kel wouldn’t let up until he ran away.”
Kel landed on Crown’s shoulder, cheeping proudly.
“You really are something else, aren’t you?” Crown asked, lifting a finger to stroke her tiny head. The animals were all changed due to Daine’s presence, but Kel was the oddest sparrow she’d ever met. “You should be training for knighthood,” she teased the tiny bird.
Squire Griffin stepped around the fallen centaur, holding one hand to his wounded belly. The bag that had been in its arms was covered with blood – due to the multiple lacerations Griffin had sliced into his hands before their fight could begin.
He opened it carefully and groaned. Holy Mithros, it was a baby griffin – his namesake. It looked up at him, ruffling its brindled feathers, and made a frightened hiss.
“This is not good,” Griffin said, deftly dodging her bite.
He didn’t want her, but she needed him. “If you’re awful,” he warned, “I’ll drop you in a river!”
