Series: Quiet Affections Title: Enough Rating: G Event: 110 word (reverse) hurdle Words: 110 Summary: Sometimes, very few words are needed to express emotion.
A year later, he finds himself in her solar again, defeated and robbed of his pride. “I have allowed Mindelan to remain,” he tells her.
Her grey eyes sparkle faintly with a mixture of reassurance and relief, and they are enough.
*
For his birthday, Eiralys visits him in Corus; Vivenne does not. “Mama’s still angry,” she states bluntly one evening. His mouth tightens, unrepentant still. But her young eyes reproach him, and it is enough.
*
When Wyldon confesses what he has done, Vivenne says nothing. Her expression of sickened enlightenment as she sweeps away is enough. Later, he finds that her bedchamber door, locked against him, speaks even more emphatically.

"Dear Wyldon,
You're a twit.
Sincerely, Your Wife"

Ha!! This is exactly what I was going for! I like the idea of Vivenne totally not agreeing with Wyldon's decision regarding putting Kel on probation - and being really clear about that even if she doesn't say anything about it. Even the kids know!!!

I can definitely see the behind-the-scenes of First Test going this way! I think that Wyldon has a lot more pride than I usually accredit him, and this fic showcases that side of him really nicely.

The only thought that I can really form after reading this is 'oooh'. So I might just stick with that.

I love that Eiralys is upset, too, but doesn't have the power/position to lock him out of her life. Wyldon's pride is perfect, and I love that one line in the canon gives us freedom to show Vivenne with such openness and authority over her husband.

Thanks guys!! Lisa - the feeling I got was that Eiralys (as the oldest Cavall girl) would be upset and worried because of the effect all this is having on her parents' marriage - and she knows it's her dad's fault. I don't imagine that Vivenne would be the type of woman to just unquestioningly obey or support her husband if she didn't agree with him. I just don't see Wyldon being attracted to someone like that, and it's pretty clear that their marriage is a loving one.

I'm in complete agreement - that's how I've always seen Eiralys in my own Cavall headcanon. And Wyldon definitely wouldn't want a meek wife who let him have his way. We have only one line from the canon (talking about going home and idling about until his wife threatens to leave him) but it's such a great image and reflection of what their personality as a couple is like.
