Summary: To her great chagrin, Irnai’s friends decide that her brown locks must be snipped away.
“Oww!” Irnai exclaimed. “Stop pulling my hair!” She had been just left the infirmary on her visit to Loey. The girl had recently fallen off her horse, earning her a colorful collection of bruises.
Gydo laughed. “It ain’t my fault,” he said with a country twang. “Yer hair’s too long.”
“No, it isn’t,” she said in defiance. She folded her arms across her chest. “You should just stop pulling my hair. It is my hair after all.”
“I’m not really pulling your hair,” he said, a lopsided grin on his face. “I’m combing it with my fingers. It’s your fault that there are so many knots.”
“So my brush isn’t that affective,” she said timidly, heat rushing to her cheeks.”It isn’t my fault.”
He leaned closer to her, and (making his best effort to sound evil) said, “Then I guess we’ll just have to cut it off!”
She shied away, worry passing across her face; her hair was one of the only vague connections she had to her biological parents. Her brows furrowed stubbornly. “You’d never do it.”
He smiled like he had a secret. “Then maybe you will!” That was odd.
“Hey! Irnai, want to play ting with us?” Tobe called in the distance, waving a hand in the air to make sure that she heard him.
“What’s ting?” Gydo asked. Irnai shrugged and ran over to find out, forgetting their argument.
Two days later, Kel found the seer by herself away from the other kids. She was clearly sulking, covering her face with a ridiculous hat.
“What happened to your hair, Irnai?” Kel asked soothingly, kneeling on one knee so that they could speak eye to eye.
The little girl pouted. Her cheeks were still wet from crying. “I cut it.”
“Why?” She ran her fingers delicately through the girl’s brown locks.
“Gydo put something really sticky in it and I couldn’t get it out.” She glowered at the young boy, vowing revenge. He caught her staring and wasn’t all too impressed, being that he was simply stifling a laugh.
“Well joke’s on them,” Kel said, smiling. “I like your hair. It looks much better than your old style.”
“Really?” Irnai asked, green eyes wide. “But it’s uneven everywhere —I checked in the mirror!”
“Really. Besides, hair is a hassle. It’s better short.” She stretched herself out, holding out a hand.
“Now, why don’t you and I get some lunch. I’ll deal with them later.” Kel had to deal with them later; she couldn’t think up a punishment for these kids since they liked to do chores.
“I never did like how my bangs fell in my face,” Irnai said, brightening.
The knight commander laughed and agreed. “That’s the spirit.”
When they passed by Gydo, she stuck her tongue out at him and giggled at the dumbfounded look on his face.
She thought hard about the new —hopefully permanent— home she’d been given. It was odd, filled with some of the most disagreeable people.
She loved it.
