Title: Certainty
Rating: PG
Event: 4x100 Relay
Words: 400
Summary: Four Worlds where Irnai wanted to live in the present.
I.
Anders stared at the child in front of him. T’was unnerving. Perfect brown curls, her evergreen eyes and nose.
He sighed. So did she.
Irnai cocked a brow; he mimicked her –or was she copying him?
She frowned. “Why’d you call me?”
Then, she remembered. A cloudy scene of a man –no… Anders! – kissing a girl’s forehead. “G’night, daughter.” She blanched at the girl’s face.
“I –Irnai…” the knight said. He took her hand; she flinched “I know this is odd, shocking. But I, myself, believe very strongly that –that…”
She cried, elated. “You believe that you’re my biological father?"
II.
Irnai looked up gratefully into hazel eyes. “The Protector of the Small! You’re here!” She hugged Kel, tears flowing freely.
“Protector of the Small?” she breathed. What’s that mean?
She nodded. “You will help Rathhausak.”
Kel let the mystery be for now and had Neal heal the child. When he finished, she had the girl —Irnai, she learned— bathe. Then, she told Irnai about their contract.
The Seer went hysterical at that. “I’m so lucky to have the Protector of the Small as my master.”
Kel stroked her brown hair. “I promise that you will be safe with me here.”
III.
“So, what’d you see, darling?”
The Warlord’s voice was soft, gentle —the complete opposite of his ‘soldier voice’. She’d been a small, vulnerable seer wandering alone. But she said he’d be powerful, so he raised her as his own.
She relayed her vision: a Tortallan knight coming to slay Blayce. She smiled. “Now, will we play?”
“I’m sorry, darling. I’m busy.” Maggur kissed her forehead. “Tonight. Promise.”
Irnai nodded solemnly and went to her rooms. Her father had given her everything; she trusted him. But that information unsettled her; now, more than ever, she wished that her father wasn’t busy.
IV.
Irnai frowned at the scene around her. What was her purpose at New Hope?
“Don’t strain yourself,” Tobe said.
She smiled sheepishly. “Sorry.”
“If you need anything, just ask me. I’ll tell milady.” He smiled cheekily. “I’m what you’d call her guardian.”
“But I don’t understand. Why bring me here?” Her sorrowful eyes were properly downcast.
Tobe cocked a brow. “What d’you mean?”
“I’ven’t a use. No magic, no muscles. Why take me?”
He took her hand. “You're not useless. We all want you here; the more the merrier.”
She smiled. After years of wandering alone, she was finally wanted.
I. What if Irnai’s father was actually Anders of Mindelan?
II. What if Irnai had been found in Tobe’s position?
III. What if Irnai had been captured by Maggur?
IV. What if Irnai hadn’t been a Seer?
