Title: Longevity
Rating: PG-13 for character death
Summary: *MASTIFF SPOILERS* One cat has more than nine lives. Slight AU.
Ersken dies first, saving his Puppy in a raid. Then Kora, not soon after, from a plague in the city she refused get treated. After that comes Goodwin, from, praise fortune, nothing more painful than old age. Then Ahuda, and Gershom, of the same.
Beka cries over all of them, and no amount of purring or wise statements from him can stop it. Farmer tries to comfort her, but she pushes him away, and forgives him later.
And five years later, he dies as well, the product of another mage’s experiment, and that’s the worst, because Beka, grey streaks overtaking the blond, calls him a looby and an idiot and her voice breaks but the tears just won’t come.
Not long after she joins them all, on account of a madman in the Kennel who only did, he knows, what she refused to do herself on principle.
And then there is Rosto, long retired, with his hair full gray now and wrinkles mixed with the scars, and the old bachelors sit together, mourning the woman they loved in silence.
Pounce, two years later, envies his friends’ mortality. There will be no gray hairs and aching limbs for him, he knows, not ever. He will never have to feel the pain of old age and watch a younger generation surpass him. He only has the pain of dead friends and lifetimes of memories to show him what life is.
Constellations are forbidden the peace of the Black God's realm.
