Title: The Thief-Lord's Apprentice Rating: G Word Count: 250 Summary: It's time for the boy called Roach's first big job and he is nervous - he doesn't want to let his mentor down.
The boy – Roach, he reminded himself, Roach - was nervous. It was his first big job with his new gang and he was scared he was going to make a mistake. He hadn’t been learning the art of thieving very long, although he was already well acquainted with the way of the street, and he was still so little. He didn’t think he’d be of much use to these older, more experienced boys, but he had been assured that it was his size that made such a valuable asset for this assignment. His small chest puffed up with pride as he recalled the Thief-Lord himself telling him this. He – Roach – still recalled the day this kind older man had approached him on the street and offered him the safety of one his gangs – a safety which included more food than he had been able to scrape for himself in the miserable months after his mother’s death. He couldn’t understand why the other boys seemed to not like him – were, in fact, almost afraid of him, in a worshipful sort of way. The Thief-Lord had been so kind to him; had taught him the basics of thieving with such patience and encouragement. Under Roach’s nervousness lay his true concern – letting down this man he looked up to. The other boys had said he didn’t like to be disappointed and he had resolved, then and there, to never give the Thief-Lord cause to be disappointed in him. He would make him proud.

That's a side of Briar that I hadn't considered. Poor little guy, having no one but the Thief-Lord. I like what you did with it.
