Wishlist Item: #5: Thayet/Raoul
Summary: Thayet and Raoul have a conversation on the ship on the way to Tortall.
“Do you think I’ll like Tortall?” Thayet asks, and Raoul looks into his cup of ale, feeling slightly ill. The ship rocks slightly, and the ale splashes about.
“Do you think you’ll like Tortall?” He asks in return, and feels the slight heating of his cheeks when she laughs happily in return. He does not often confer with beautiful women alone, least of all when she is the prettiest he has ever seen and he has no one to turn to in back up, with Alanna green down below and Coram giving her what little comfort he could, Liam and Buri out on the deck watching waves crash over the deck in a way that even made him feel ill.
“You’re a knight, a pillar of the kingdom, Knight Commander of the King’s Own and one of the Bazhir. You’ve seen more of Tortall than Alanna has.”
“Hardly.”
“And you’re modest.” He snorts in reply, and she laughs again, her hands clasped around her cup.
“If you’re looking to live little in Tortall but you still want your schools for the commoners, you won’t be able to. Too much change for one person to suggest and expect support for. You’ll need some allies, but unless you become good friends with Jon or the Provost or something and take away your low profile, you might not get them.”
“So make powerful friends, make my schools and then I’ll be happy?” She smiles.
“Keep your powerful friends and then you’ll be happy. Aside from all the Court balls, Tortall and Corus are quite easy to love.” He smiles back, a wistful expression on his face at the thought of home.
“Then I’ve picked a good friend in you. Powerful, and will keep me away from all the balls.” She smiles, laughing, before dropping her voice to a confidential low. “Are they really that bad?”
