Wishlist Item: 4. Tris/Keth, post-WotE
Summary: A letter, and its contents, take Keth by surprise - but even he doesn't fully recognise what's so different.
Keth is surprised by the letter. It’s not as if he hasn’t received letters from her before – she’s actually a very good correspondent, much better than Keth himself (something he tries not to feel too guilty about). No, it’s the content that surprises him and, more specifically, the tone. He’s not sure what is different – and he isn’t even sure how he can tell something is different – but it is. Usually her letters read like her voice, full of sarcasm and wry humour. But this one – this one is softer, almost...vulnerable.
It never occurrs to Keth that her writing might not be the only thing that is different – that perhaps he is different too; is reading things differently.
Keth reads the letter again, wrinkling his brow in frustration. She writes about her time in Namorn, but something is missing. Her descriptions of court life and the Empresses inner circle don’t tally with what his family has told him over the years. She’s hiding something and suddenly he worries that something’s wrong.
Doing quick sums in his head, Keth decides he has enough money for a trip to Summersea. He can visit Winding Circle to broaden his magical knowledge and visit his former teacher – not to check up on her, just...to make sure she’s OK. If he hurries, he can make it to Emelan before winter closes the mountain passes.
