“Welcome home, dear,” Gary said as his wife collapsed into the chair beside him.
“Thanks, Gary,” she murmured. “How was your day?”
“Uneventful.” He folded the paper he was holding and slid it into his pocket. “Yours?”
Cythera sighed. “You know how Zenoby is with fittings. She loves dressing up, but when it comes to making the dress she’s a mess.” She shook her head. “I nearly had to buy her ice cream on the way home to stop the crying. You’d think that the chocolate would have been enough to appease her.”
“Chocolate?” Gary exclaimed. “You bribed Zenoby?”
“You try taking her to a fitting! The girl refuses to stand still, and if they poke her with a pin she nearly has a meltdown!”
“But only because you’ve spoiled her, Cythera.”
“Spoiled—” Cythera paused to compose herself. “You don't—" She folded her hands in her lap. "This is how we will settle this, Gary. You can take her to the fitting in two weeks time. We’ll see if you can manage our daughter any better.”
Gary nodded. “Fine, barring that Jon gives me an important assignment that day.”
Cythera slipped a smile. “Is your job so important that you can’t get away for three hours?”
Miffed, Gary replied, “My job is incredibly important!”
Cythera took his hand in hers. “Of course it is, dear.”
Two weeks later, Gary stumbled into the Naxen sitting room. Cythera smiled and rose to greet him. “How did it go?”
Gary grinned. “Fantastically. She never complained once and was constantly giving her thanks for working on the dress.”
“Really."
“Oh yes! Zenoby, will you come here and tell your mother how nice it was to get it fitted?” The pattering of footsteps followed and Zenoby came running through the door.
“Hello, Mother,” Zenoby said. “Father and I had the best time this afternoon." She paused and gave her dazzling smile for effect. "But if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go play.” She skipped out of the room, but as she entered the hallway she bumped into the doorframe. A foil wrapped candy fell to the ground.
Cythera turned to face her husband, who was going pink and shook her head. “Sounds like a fantastic day.”
