Title: Stolen Moments of Relaxation
Rating: G
Word Count: 425
Card: Summer
Bingo: Fresh + Cotton + Lazy Afternoon + Friends + Fruit
Summary: Lazy summer afternoons are hard to come by as the Lady Knight Commander of the refugee camp New Hope, but with a little help from her friends, she manages to snag some time away. And, of course, the excuse for revenge is always welcome.
If knights had very few opportunities for relaxation, Lady Knight Commanders of refugee camps had even fewer. Even after the Scanran war was declared officially over and the governments of both countries were participating in peace talks, there were bands of renegade raiders who had not quite gotten the message that the war was over yet, not to mention all the other minutia that went into running New Hope. So when Neal had come to the tiny room that passed as her office just as she was about to leave for lunch and tell her on no uncertain terms that she was taking the afternoon off whether she liked it or not and that the people of New Hope could deal without her for six hours, Kel was understandably surprised. Ignoring her confusion, he gave her a loose cotton tunic and breeches and ordered her to change, saying that they would be more suitable.
She saw, after Neal herded her to the stables, ignoring her vehement protests, that Tobe was in on the mutiny as well. He was standing next to Hoshi and Neal’s horse, both of them freshly combed and saddled.
At this point, Kel decided that there was no hope of convincing her stunningly stubborn friends that her time would be better spent at New Hope. She would be better off just going along with their plans rather than waste her energy trying to shift an unmovable object.
Neal’s plot consisted of a picnic with fresh fruits and sandwiches that he must have begged from the cooks and a restful afternoon near a brook. Despite his carefree attitude, Neal made sure to set up a protective charm around the area and had told Kel to bring her glaive before they left the fort just in case some of the Scanran raiders managed to stumble upon them. Then, with one last stern order for Kel to enjoy herself, he ambled off to sit beside the brook and read. After a few moments of being at a loss as to what to do (had it really been that long since she had taken time off?), Kel sat down and meditated, to the sounds of the water rushing merrily across the stream bed and the rustling of the forest around her.
As they were riding back, a few hours before sunset, Kel reflected that the afternoon had been fun. As she looked at a dripping wet and disgruntled healer knight astride his horse next to her, she thought that her revenge was a nice touch too.
