Title: A Sergeant's Hope Rating: PG-13 Word Count: 264 Card: Summer Bingo: Sun + Sweat + Outdoors + Trees + Somewhere New Summary: How Sarge came to Tortall and became Sarge.
Musenda wiped away the sweat that was beginning to trickle into his eyes, making them sting and burn. Deciding that it was time he took a break, he shielded his sight from the brutal sun and saw a tree not too far away. A few minutes walking brought him into the scant shade it provided and he sat down tiredly. To put off the moment that he would have to leave this protection, he pulled out the last piece of bread left from the three loaves that he had stolen when he escaped and began to eat. He chewed and swallowed slowly, not savoring the taste, but trying to make it last. With the knowledge that he was now out of food came the realization that he would have to figure out some way to earn money. That was simple enough in and of itself, but when you added in the fact that he was an escaped slave with fresh whip marks on his back and newly scabbed rings around his wrists, both of which proclaimed his status to the world, approaching anyone who might be tempted by the fifty silver noble reward for an escaped slave would be downright foolish. He could sleep outdoors – the gods knew he had done enough of it since he left his master – but he still needed to eat and drink.
Perhaps, he thought, it was time to go somewhere new, somewhere out of Carthak. He had heard that Tortall offered freedom for all those who came. Stowing away on a boat couldn’t be that hard, could it?

This line broke my heart.
It's brilliantly crafted, and the images it brings up... well done.

There is so much potential in a Sarge!fic, and it is so rarely tapped, but you have and I love what you did with this. And the line rosa quoted breaks my heart, too.
