Title: Dawn Rating: PG Summary: Briar has nightmares of a different sort.
The night-light glows from its place beside the bed. Briar finds himself staring at it across the soft hill of her shoulder, darkness seeping into the folds and slopes of the blanket. Her breathing is shallow and steady, and not for the first time he wonders why it's so comforting to have another person beside you, how something so simple can ward off the darkness and the things that lurk in it.
He had never been afraid of the dark as a child. But now that he's grown, he can feel the fear building, creeping, inside him. Sandry's night-light can't chase away the darkness of his thoughts. No matter how many times he closes his eyes or how many times he promises himself that it's getting better, the bodies are still there, the smell, the sweat, the fear.
The night-light dulls as morning approaches. He watches as the shadows around the room shift and change, melting away with the rising sun. Every night has a dawn. He's still waiting for his.

Aww. This is so lovely. I adore that the night-light doesn't comfort him, but Sandry does, and that there is no magic cure-all for him.
