Title: Bound
Rating: PG
Pairing: Kara/Halef Seif
Event: AU Pole Vault
Word Count: 353
Summary: If Alanna never fought the Ysandir, never came to the Bloody Hawk, if she’d gone to the convent…
“Halef Seif, you must tell us how to deal with this,” the blacksmith insisted, directing the headman to his tent where the slender girl was bound.
Her eyes were filled with madness and she fought at her restraints. In her struggles her veil had slipped from its place, revealing the fine bone-structure that had been masked for three years. She was lovely, or would have been without the disheveled hair, bleeding wrists, and the ravings of a woman possessed.
“When did she try to leave?” Halef asked Gammal.
“This morning. She said nothing to anyone, but tried to take one of the horses.”
“Let her go!” howled Akhnan Ibn Nazzir. “The Balance will be maintained!”
Halef gripped the shaman’s robes in his fists and pushed him through the flaps of the tent. “No one dares to willingly send children to the Black City, no matter who they are.” His voice was low and dangerous. “Another suggestion like that will result in your banishment from this tribe.” He released the man with a violent shove and returned to the girl’s side.
In front of Kara, his anger dissipated. He knelt before her and whispered calming words as he carefully put her veil back in its place. “She will not eat?” he guessed.
Gammal shook his head. “She is as good as lost to us.”
Halef caressed her face gently, wiping away her angry, crazed tears. It was a pity to lose a maiden, but even worse to lose one he’d fought so hard to keep. She had nearly been cast out, and he would not have that done to anyone. No one – especially a girl frightened by her own magic – would be cast into the desert while he was headman.
“Her soul will remain with us,” he said, his voice firm. It was a comfort to know that she would not be lost to the Nameless Ones. “I will stay with her as long as she is alive.” He knew that it wouldn’t be long – girls and boys who longed for the Black City never lasted – but he would not let her die alone.
