Title: Rating: G Couple/Character: Kalasin jian Wilima Event: 100 word dash Words: 100 Summary: But she can’t help but wonder at the man who cannot take joy in a child he helped create.
“A daughter.” Adigun’s nostrils flare in disgust and he stalks from the room, servants scattering like skittish goats in his wake.
She knows he had wished for a son. Daughters hold no power in this world, are oftentimes treated as little more than livestock. But she can’t help but wonder at the man who cannot take joy in a child he helped create.
Kalasin names her Thayet, in honour of a foremother, and has the old rites performed in secret.
Her husband may not treasure this child, but she will. Son or daughter or neither, a child is a gift.

Ouch. That's so, so harsh. Kalasin's strength in the face of her husband's anger is startling and beautiful.

Oh, so painful and wonderful. I love her unconditional acceptance of Thayet, and the light touch in the mention of the "old rites" really highlights the cultural divide. Lovely.

That Kalasin sees a child for what it is - a gift, regardless of gender - is beautiful, and I see so much of her in Thayet.
