Title: Crossroads
Rating: PG-13
Couple/Character: Matthias Tunstall
Event: 4x100 word sin relay
Words: 400
Summary: Mattes stands at four different crossroads.
-
1. Envy
“You’re still young, Mattes,” Tamsin says quietly, and there’s a kind of regretful ache in her words, a distant look in her eyes as she nurses her ale in her bandaged hand. Mattes doesn’t let anything show on his face when he glances at the long scar that bisects the eye the healer couldn’t save. “I’d take that Unicorn District offer, and the promotion.”
If I were you, she means.
He regards his former mentor across the damp and still-grimy surface of the table, and wonders if that’s who he’ll become in twenty years if he stays with Jane Street.
2. Greed
If he reaches out, cups his hand around her jaw, he can trace the thin line of blood the Rat’s knife sliced across her face. Mattes has never thought of love as exclusive; but there’s something about what they have together, just as there’s something about what Clary has with Tom.
He can’t take that from her.
There’s an unspoken rule, among the Dogs: nothing on duty. It’s almost night now. They could, but something in Mattes knows that things can’t change – that they can’t be partners and lovers at the same time.
He turns away. “Let’s go,” he says.
3. Pride
“TUNSTALL!” Asif bellowed, cupping his hands around his mouth. “Get off the damned roof, now!”
Mattes shouted a reply and tackled the escaping foist from behind, pinning him. “In the name of the Crown,” he gasped, fumbling for his rawhide cords to bind the Rat.
It was at that point that the Rat jerked around, legs lashing out in a swift twist-kick. The next moment, his eyes were stinging, and Mattes was staggering backwards, coughing and choking from the faceful of soot he’d gotten.
He had the time to curse in Hurdik before he slipped and fell off the roof.
4. Lust
Sabine is…complicated, as all simple things are. There’s nothing simple about an affair between a commoner and a noble, and they both know it. Clary knows it, for all she’s warned him.
“Thinking?” Sabine asks, cheerfully. They make a strange couple, walking through Fishgut Lane at night, but the casual way Sabine lays her hand on her sword hilt dissuades any Rats, and most of them know Mattes’ face. Her other hand curls about his shoulder, and she pulls him closer.
When they separate briefly, he catches sight of the wicked grin she is wearing. “No,” Mattes breathes, “Not anymore.”
