Title: Yamani Roses Rating: G Couple/Character: Matthias Tunstall Event: 100 word dash Words: 100 Summary: He grows roses because they remind him of his grandfather.
-
He grows roses because they remind him of his grandfather, and because he needs more than a memory of the hills. He grows miniature Yamani roses because Tetsuko teaches him how to before she left with the first of autumn and a white rose on his doorstep.
“It is an art,” Tetsuko says, and she smiles knowingly when his dark eyes linger among the small flowers of her Yamani box-garden. “Life is art, Mattes.”
“They’re beautiful.”
The earth takes care of her own, he hears his grandfather say. It takes skill, boy, to grow, to nurture.
“Teach me,” Mattes says.

Mmm, this is so wistful and lovely! I adore the way you've fleshed out this aspect of his character, and also how you've tied him to his roots.

This is just so pretty, with this gorgeous poignant feeling of nostalgia - in such a short piece, you've given Mattes so much background!

I LOVE the idea that he needs more than a memory of where he came from. It's so realistic and very beautiful.

Very pretty -- which is not something I associate much with Tunstall, so I love it!

I love the delicacy of this. We don't see much of Mattes's gardening, so this drabble is welcome.
