“Any reason why you picked the Own?” Evin asked, lounging against the tent pole. Dom glanced up in the middle of pulling his shirt back over his head, and arched an eyebrow.
“In what sense?” he wanted to know.
“You’re a noble,” Evin pointed out. He was idly playing with a polished lump of black rock, and Dom was tempted to ask him what that was. He didn’t, focusing on Evin’s question instead. “You could have picked knighthood. Or something else.”
Dom shrugged. “Why the Riders?”
Evin glanced up at Dom now, shoving the rock into his pocket. A wicked smirk played over his lips. “A question for a question?”
“Fair enough,” Dom said. “You?”
“It sounded exciting,” Evin replied. “Promising. It was a new force, when I joined up, you know. My folks were Players, and I wasn’t a stranger to the road, but – “ he held out his hands, palm up in a wordless shrug. “I wanted something else. Ma was a friend of Baron George Cooper who suggested the Riders for me, and I didn’t have anywhere else in mind, so I thought of giving it a try. It grew on me.” He folded his arms across his chest. “Now you.”
“Didn’t want to be a knight,” Dom said. “My older brother’s one. I thought that was plenty of knights in the family. And then I met my lord at one of those social gatherings – behind a curtain, so as to speak.” He grinned wickedly, and the smile lit up his bright blue eyes. “I thought the Own sounded better. A knight works alone. But in the Own, you have your squad. So I signed on the next time they were taking on recruits, and here I am.”
“Any regrets?”
Dom grinned, and pulled Evin closer, his shirt discarded and forgotten. “No,” he said seriously. “You?”
“’Course not,” Evin smirked, and leaned in for a kiss.
