Title: The Disappointments of Unripe Fruit (Two) Rating: G Word Count: 243 Pairing: Dom/Evin Round/Fight: 2/A Summary: Evin’s impatient, Dom’s confused.
Dom sat beside Evin, leaning against the wall of the Own barracks. He watched as Evin carefully selected a plum out of the bowl in his lap. The Rider took a small bite before, with a cry of frustration, flung the plum away into the darkness.
“Alright, Evin,” Dom said as he confiscated the fruit bowl, “what’s this about?”
Evin bit down on his lower lip, the moonlight deepening the shadows cast by his frown. “It just doesn’t make sense,” he said, letting his head fall back against the wall.
Dom raised an eyebrow. “What doesn’t make sense? You sitting out here in the middle of the night throwing away perfectly good plums? Mithros! Well, that is a surprise. Here I was thinking it made perfect sense.” Dom tried not to cringe as he heard the trace of his cousin’s sarcasm in his own voice.
“Perfectly good?” Evin spluttered. He snatched a plum out of the bowl and waved it in front of Dom’s face. “Perfectly good? Look at it. It does look perfect doesn’t it? It looks ready. Ripe. It feels ripe, and it smells ripe. And then you take a bite and it’s bitter and painful and nothing makes sense anymore because you thought it was ready, and it wasn’t, and everything you thought you knew was a lie.”
Dom put aside the fruit bowl and shifted around so he was facing Evin. “We’re not really talking about fruit here, are we?”
