Title: Sound Rating: PG Word Count: 239 Pairing: Jon/Zahir; Team Bend – A – Lot Round/Fight: 1/A Summary: Zahir has difficulty attuning his senses to city life.
It took a while for Zahir to wake, and to realise what had woken him. At first the sound was quiet – or else he was not yet conscious enough to hear things properly – and he thought it was his mother pouring dry grain into a bowl. Then he thought it was his sister turning over a rain stick, hoping for an unlikely event. It was some time before he was awake enough to think it was the usual sound of the city, and of the palace, which was in itself a city. It was hard for him to sleep here, or to concentrate on anything, the city was so loud. He rarely complained about it; his friends scoffed if he did, or got offended. They said they couldn’t hear the city noise up in the palace, but Zahir was always disconcerted by the shouts of the markets, the chants of the temples, and the crashes of industry. Joren got angry, once, when Zahir said something about it, so Zahir had learned to say nothing. In the desert, there was silence as far as the ear could hear, and, if you rode out a bit, silence as far as the eye could see. The city was an assault on the senses. Zahir opened his eyes and saw Jonathan sleeping beside him, and it was a while before he realised that this time, the sound of the city was the King snoring.

I love the contrast between the silent desert and the raucous city life, and how Zahir is so sensitive to these differences.

This is such a great idea to explore, and you've done it so well! Plus the humour at the end is a nice finish. ;D
