Title: J is for Journey Rating: G Word Count: 127 Pairing: Jon/Zahir – Team Bend-a-lot Round/Fight: 1A Summary: (n) a travelling or going from one place to another; the distance covered when travelling.
The sun and the wind cuts his eyes. He raises a hand, squinting to his left where Zahir sits silently on his horse. It’s difficult to read his profile, but Jonathan can almost imagine the thoughts that his squire is sifting through at that moment.
Returning to the tribes, if only for a brief time, had seemed important. But now Jonathan is having doubts. He chews on his bottom lip, dry and chapped from days in the desert, then adjusts his burnoose for what seems like the hundredth time.
Jonathan had learned at a young age that home is nothing more than an abstract idea, a feeling, a memory. He wonders if Zahir is beginning to realise that now, or if he has known it all along.

This is lovely, bittersweet, and wistful - there's just so much abstract in this piece, and it's pretty.

Oh! I love the idea that the desert might not feel like home to Zahir anymore . . . I've been thinking of writing some J/Z fic with the Bazhir, and I might pick up the threads of that thought there. Seconding the love for the bittersweetness of this.

You've picked up one of my common themes (that Rosethorn was always home with Lark), and I think it's so important. Home is abstract, and I think we choose it, a little bit.
