Tris is the first to master meditation lessons, even though Niko has been giving Briar many lessons to control his power. They think it’s because Tris has a temper, and Briar less so. Niko finds this amusing- and Briar always scowls and asks why.
The last time he did that, the wind whipped Niko’s wide-brimmed rain hat from his head and he had to push some of the rain aside to get it.
They are an odd match of master and pupil, because Briar can’t be bothered about books, and Niko wonders why he has to keep pulling his student out of Dedicate Gorse’s realm. He thinks Rosethorn has gotten the better bargain, because Tris’ temper doesn’t flare that much now.
The last time she did, the plants in Rosethorn’s garden went amok, sprouting thorns everywhere and reaching into Discipline. After Rosethorn sorted that out, it never happened again.
They think that Briar makes an odd weather mage, and Tris an odd plant-mage.
After Sandry spins them all together and their powers interweave, Briar kneels before the shakkan tree in Crane’s greenhouse, and for a moment, feels deeply connected to it in a way so natural he finds himself trembling when the connection breaks.
Tris stands alone in the rain, and watches the lightning strike, battering trees. For a moment, she feels no green lances of agony but a silver glory of white fire from the sullen grey skies.
