Title: Yes, Sire Rating: G Word Count: 243 Pairing: Jon/Zahir – Team Bend-a-lot Round/Fight: 1/A Summary: Zahir just wants one compliment, just one.
“Work on the blocking on your left side, Zahir,” commanded the king.
“Yes, sire.” He seemed to spend a lot of time saying that these days. Being squire to the king, while a prestigious position, was also boring. And the king seemed to find a vast amount of delight in nitpicking apart everything he does. Zahir has been squire to the King of Tortall to the year, and he has never once been told “good job.”
Zahir just wishes, that once, his knightmaster would give him a compliment.
“When riding, you tend to lean forward a bit too much on your horse, Zahir, don’t you agree?”
“Yes, sire.”
“Work on the strength of your shoulders, it’s affecting your combat performance.”
“Yes, sire.”
Then, when sparring with the King, Zahir defeats him, holding his sword up to the king’s face, while Jon’s sword lies on the ground. Zahir removes his sword from the king’s face, and hand’s Jon his own with a deep bow.
But inside, he’s delighted. His knightmaster will have to give him a compliment now, he’ll have to say something, and Zahir can almost taste how good it would feel to have all his hard work recognized.
The king straightens. “Work on your footwork, Zahir.”
The expectation in Zahir’s chest turns to ice; the smile slips off his face; he just wants to yell at the king- aren’t I doing a good enough job, aren't I?
But he doesn’t.
“Yes, sire.”

Poor Zahir! I love the depiction of his training though, and Jon as the unbending taskmaster.
