Title: Not a Man Rating: PG-13 Word Count: 158 Pairing: Jon/Zahir Round/Fight: 1/A Summary: Jon isn't really a man, because he's a king first.
“We can’t, Zahir.” The king’s voice is low, and tense with longing.
“But- but you’re the king.” Zahir’s voice is unsteady, and Jon has to remind himself that Zahir is still his subject. “Don’t you make the rules?”
“Not without bloodshed,” Jon whispers. He buttons his shirt up, very slowly, like he doesn’t want it to end. He can still taste the desert on his lips; feel the rough sand on his smooth northern skin.
“I understand.”
“No, Zahir, really!” Jon protests. “Imagine the scandal if I was caught taking advantage of my squire- another male. A Bazhir male, to boot. The conservatives would have a field day. I would bring Tortall to its knees.” Zahir is silent. “Zahir, please. You don’t know how much I want this. But I can’t.”
Then Jon leaves, and Zahir finds himself wishing, not for the first time, that he could have fallen in love with a man, and not a king.

Oh, wow. I love this line: He can still taste the desert on his lips; feel the rough sand on his smooth northern skin.
It makes the relationship so...expansive? I think that's the word I want. It takes up so much space, so much of my attention, in so few words... beautiful!

This is so beautiful, The last line is just gorgeous! Somehow, this reminds me a little of Jon/Alanna, only in reverse. Now Jon accepts who he his and his (almost) lover can't.

I really love this :/ 'Not a man, but a king', as if the two are different, and in this case, they are. Jon the king cannot take these liberties. Jon the man wants to. But in the end, it's the king who wins out.
