Title: Desperation Rating: PG Word Count: 192 Pairing: Team Discipline (Rosethorn/Lark) Round/Fight: 1/B Summary: On the Road to Summersera, Lark has a realization
Author's Note: I have a very bad habit of refusing to post things I'm not satisfied with. Therefore I wind up with dozens of scraps of things I never post. But, what is SMACKDOWN for if not to break ourselves of this and take suggestions?
It is noon - midday - time of sun and of light, but smoke chokes the road to a surreal dusk. They are burning bodies on the road to Summersea.
“She’s dying!”
The boy’s words echo through her head, chasing themselves in mad, scattered circles.
Lark wants to argue with him, but he’s the only one save perhaps Crane that loves her as much as she does.
A shape approaches at a gallop, a guard, ghoulish in the white robes and masks of those tasked with tending the dead. He fades, and an image - Rosethorn dressed head to foot in white, a crimson thumb on her forehead - Rosethorn - laughing at midsummer as they celebrated her birth beneath the season’s constellations - Rosethorn, quiet as she contemplated a small scrap of boy through her workroom window.
The vision fades, and Lark realizes suddenly that she is not the only one that cannot live without her. And, with horror, how impossible it would be to keep the promise she’d had the children make, if things were reversed.
Standing in the stirrups, she points the horse towards the Mire and kicks it into a desperate gallop.

This is a lovely piece! I love that it's not just about who Lark is to Rosethorn, but also who Briar and Crane are to her, as well. This whole thing rings with fear and sorrow.

I'm so glad you posted this. I love the look into Lark's mind at this moment.

I have no idea how you could be unhappy with this. I think you got across the fear and the sudden oh-my-god-no strike of understanding that this moment meant for Lark. The poignancy of Rosethorn's contemplation of Briar through the window was beautiful, as well. Good job!

Lark wants to argue with him, but he’s the only one save perhaps Crane that loves her as much as she does. Such a powerful sentiment - and an especially powerful one for Lark to make. Many lovers don't seem to realise that others equal their love as well, even when 'equal' does not mean 'same.' This entire story is so beautiful that I wish I could quote it all, but that would be a bit pointless I suppose. (: I love Lark's sudden understanding that she probably couldn't keep herself to her promise either...makes knowing how things really went down easier, in a way. Anyway, fantastic story!
