Summary: When Clary first meets Mattes, she can't stand him.
The first in a series of the couple's firsts.
The first time she met Matthias Tunstall, she couldn’t stand him. He looked so at ease, unlike the other Dogs at attention, and stood in the kennel as though he owned it. Later, as he slouched in a bench in the corner, he seemed to not have a care in the world, unlike all the others who were always attentive. Fresh from the hills, he even had asexy infuriating accent. No one needed to roll their Rs that much.
Standing with her partner, waiting for Day Watch to come in, she glanced in his direction. He caught her eyes and winked, the great looby. She glared at him and quickly looked away. Until they were mustered out later, she studiously ignored him.
It was hard to ignore him later, though, when all 6’3” of barbarian were planted in front of her as she tried to leave. “Hello darlin’.” (Those Rs!) “How about a nice drink to loosen us up after work?”
She stopped and glared up (and up) at him. “I don’t play those types of games, hillman.”
“We’ll cut out the games then and just head straight for a nice bath?” He gave her a wide smile and, oh Gods, his eyes sparkled.
“I’ve a cove of my own to go home to.” She said, stepping around him and holding her nose in the air like a good affronted city woman.
It was not until later that she found that Mattes loved nothing more than a challenge.
