Summary: Clary knows him well enough to see behind the façade.
“I mean it. If I find out that you told anybody, I’ll make your worst nightmare come true.”
“Clary Goodwin screeching over something as tiny as a spider is far too good to keep to myself.” He grinned. “Besides, I don’t think you’d go to all the trouble of learning to speak Hurdik, so you can go and talk to my mother and bring her back with a nice girl from the tribe for me to marry.”
The grin Clary gave him back was almost predatory. “That won’t work on me, Mattes. I know your real worst nightmares.” She felt bad as soon as his smile faltered. “You talk in your sleep,” she murmured, and they set off out into the street again, both eager to leave the conversation behind.

I usually think she's claustrophobic and Tom's scared of heights, but I don't know about Mattes...maybe he's a hypochondriac/bit of a drama queen when he gets injured. That would be funny.
