Summary: “I don’t see why you had to drag me along for this,” complained Mattes.
Clary ran her fingers over the row of charms, stopping at a gold one. She picked it up. Despite how expensive they were, she always bought gold pregnancy charms; she and Tomlan were nowhere near ready to have children, and she wanted to keep it that way.
“I don’t see why you had to drag me along for this,” complained Mattes, lounging against the stall. The stallowner glared at him with sharp eyes. He ignored her, turning his attention to the street. Even off-duty, he liked to watch for cutpurses; grumbling bellies didn’t get a day off.
“Like you had anything better to do,” she retorted, threading her purchase onto a long piece of cord. Making a secure knot, she put the charm on, tucking it under her shirt. The cord was long enough that the charm couldn’t be seen at her neck, and Mattes judged that the length meant it would rest on level with her breastband.
Clary caught him staring. “What?”
He stood up and took her hand in his, running his thumb slowly over her palm. “You’re right; I don’t have anything better to do.” A twitch of a smile ran over his face and he felt Clary gravitate towards him instinctively, her lips parting gently in surprise when their hips connected. “Plenty of time to try out that new charm of yours.”
