“Our little girl’s all grown up,” Mattes said, slinging an arm around Clary’s shoulders. “Her first Big Rat. I’m so proud.”
Clary grinned up at him. “Me too.” She knew despite his teasing tone, he really meant what he said. “Don’t like to think how long that scummer would have gone on stealing kids for without our Puppy.”
“She’d done it for too long already,” Mattes said soberly. His cold fingers brushed against the back of her neck, sending a shiver down her spine.
When she looked at his face, it was unnaturally serious. She wrapped her arms around him, burying her nose in his neck. “We got them. The three of us.”
