Title: Romance Rating: PG-13 Word Count: 219 Pairing: Clary/Mattes Round/Fight: 2/B Summary: Mattes watches his new partner practice with the baton.
-
Sometimes, Mattes wonders if the Jane Street kennel’s got more loose Dogs than the others. Maybe more Dogs gone crooked too. A boy from the hills knows how to keep his mouth shut, how to survive in Corus, and get by with just about anyone they throw his way. Easy-going, yes, but he’s yet to meet a partner he can really work with.
Clary Goodwin. He’s heard about her a little from Tallis, nothing that makes him think she’s got to be any different. He’s never worked with a female Dog before. Maybe this one will be interesting. Loose Dog, the rumours said. Something about getting knifed on a bad deal, but Goodwin’s back on duty now, and nothing loose about the fierce concentrated intensity with which she works her baton under Sergeant Ishram’s watchful eye.
Goodwin, Ishram had said firmly, as if expecting Mattes to complain about the choice of partner. Mattes said nothing. He hardly complained. Pretty enough, he thinks idly, watching from the side. Dark brown hair cropped short, but strong.
At any rate, more interesting than Haneda, garotted by the wire-in-the-codpiece trick. The last time Mattes checked, Clary Goodwin had been a Dog far longer than him. Maybe she’d even be the one keeping him out of trouble this time.
He grinned. She glanced up.

I really like this fic! I love that Mattes has heard of Clary, and he's thinking about her but doesn't really form an opinion/judgement until after he's seen her. And then half of it is that she's pretty.
