-
One mistake new Rats keep making: they forget there’s always two of them. Mattes-and-Clary, Clary-and-Mattes. Either way you look at it, there’s two names there. Joined into a formidable partnership, perhaps, but still undeniably two people.
Mattes calmly blocks the sword cut with his baton, thanks Mithros for the lead core as the steel bits deep into the wood. Oh, he’s going to be sanding this one out for weeks after, but better the baton than his sarden life, Clary would say. His arm is bleeding sluggishly but the wound doesn’t seem too bad. Drip. Drip.
Back one step. Back another.
The Rat is confident, too confident. Hired swords usually are. They think a swordsman can overcome a Dog. Sword beats baton, and that’s usually true.
Mattes smiles, then, as a sharp voice comes from behind. “Drop the sword, in the King’s name.”
Clary Goodwin is there, with what must be half the kennel behind her.
That’s the thing about new Rats, Mattes thinks smugly, as the hired sword is disarmed, bound, and led away. They always forget there’s two Dogs. It’s Mattes-and-Clary, Clary-and-Mattes, and he wouldn’t change that for the world.
