Title: Midwinter Luck Rating: PG-13 Word Count: 225 Pairing: Clary/Mattes Round/Fight: 2/B Summary: Midwinter means extra duty, but extra pay. The Dogs in the Lower City don’t have it as good, but something reminds Clary that she’s lucky enough.
-
For kennels like Unicorn Street, Midwinter means maybe half the day off, and the spreading of shifts so that Dogs can actually enjoy the time of the year. But here in the Lower City, Midwinter means festivities, means crowds, means Rats and plenty of foists out to try their hand at something.
Midwinter means extra duty, and extra pay. It means getting work done so we can go home and actually see our husbands. And if it means catching half the sarden Court of the Rogue while we’re at it, then so be it. I just want my shift to end.
Mattes stops me after we’ve foiled another robbery. Don’t the sarden Rats have anything better to do with their Midwinter? “Midwinter luck, Clary,” he breathes, and then leans in. Goddess help me, my breath catches in my throat anyway, what with that stunt.
This is Mattes: a sarden flirt. He flirts with half the women on the street. I don’t know why, but I am smiling anyway. It is nothing, of course. He must have sensed my mood getting worse as we progressed through our shift. He is being kind, thoughtful, trying to be appreciative…
He starts off down the street, doesn’t look back to see if I’m close behind. I always am.
I think of what I want to get Mattes for Midwinter.

Aww, this is super adorable! I really like that you point out the difference between the different kennels and their duties on a holiday.
