Mithros’s sack, I hate this.
I hate suspicion. Being suspicious. Suspecting. I’d rather trust. Suspicion will bleed the joy out of you if you let it. Is this how I’ve been feeling? Washed out. Bled out. Tired.
No baton. No uniform. This isn’t Dog work. This is for me. Because I have to know what Clary is doing. Because I can’t see her as crooked. I have to know what’s happening.
Because she’s my partner. My responsibility. Anyone half-blind can see that someone’s crooked in our kennel. Maybe even all the way over to Unicorn District. You don’t have to be a senior Dog to smell something in the wind. Even the Rats know it.
Even my Birdies.
I take a deep breath. Dark clothes, working man’s clothes. Rusher’s clothes. I palm the knife, feel the leather of the hilt, heavy in my hand.
Clary leaves her home. Heads towards Corus proper first. It will be a long night, I know. She will take a long meandering route to discourage shadows. To shake them off. I feel sick as I follow her. I know her tricks, I know exactly how she checks for anyone following her.
Tonight, I will use my knowledge of her against her.
I hate this. But I steel myself, and Dog.
