Title: Eyes Rating: G Word Count: 191 Pairing: Clary/Mattes Round/Fight: 2/B Summary: Mattes starts to fear the worst. Set in the Lies universe, where Clary has gone undercover to root out the worst of the Rats: a crooked Dog doing too much damage.
-
“What were you doing last night?”
She almost flinches when I ask that question. Dropped the jokes, the cheerful undertone that’s always in my voice. Voice sharp to catch her offguard. Very smooth, Mattes. You’re talking to your partner, not to a Rat.
I hate this. This constant suspicion, the way that the thought that my partner is crooked is always on my mind. No. It’s eating away at me, like a Rat. Sullenly, I nudge at a pebble with my boot. It’s my own fault that it hurts, but Clary doesn’t make the usual crack she does, something along the lines of clumsy hill barbarian.
It sounds hurtful. It isn’t. It’s just how we work. The silence hurts more now. The silence and the suspicion. I’m tired of this. I hate this. I’m not suspicious. I’m easy-going Mattes, the Dog who gets along with almost any partner. But the idea of Clary being crooked –
No. Nothing easy about it.
“Visiting one of Tomlan’s relatives,” she snaps at last. I glance at her. I wait. I will her to meet my eyes.
She does not. That hurts more than any silence.

Ooh, I love how there are so many different ways that this could be interpreted! Like, Clary could still be ashamed/upset about lying to him, or she could be lying more obviously than she really needs to in the hope that he'll pick up on it and figure it out. ;D
