I grab Clary by the arm, spin her around once we’re far away. There’s nothing we can do for Elior now, I recognise. He doesn’t need a healer. He needs a priest of the Black God.
She turns, eyes flashing. I’ve never manhandled her before, not like this. Anger is the one talking with soft menace through clenched teeth, not me. “Did you do this?” I demand. “I know what you’re doing. Truth, between us now. Did you knife Elior?”
No more easygoing. I don’t want easy. I want the truth, whatever it does to me.
“No!” she snaps back. She twists away, frees her hand from my grip. “Keep your sarden hands to yourself, Mattes.”
Or? I want to ask. Or what?
But I let myself believe her. I want to believe the outrage in her voice cannot be faked, cannot be called up on demand. Clary didn’t do it. She didn’t kill Elior.
I don’t listen to the cold Dog voice that says that it doesn’t make Clary any less crooked.
