Word Count: 243

Scummer.
That’s how I feel right now. Like scummer.
Mattes has figured out something is wrong. He watches me, more than he usually does. It’s hard to explain it. There is a reasonable connection between partners, as you settle in and figure out how to work together. You know when something’s up. Something’s up now.
Mattes watches me. He doesn’t trust me. He doesn’t joke now. His heart’s not quite in it. Is he that transparent? Am I that obvious?
I don’t like this assignment. I’ve never liked it since the Commander set it out for me, since he said I couldn’t tell Mattes. Since he decided I was the only senior Dog he could trust. I didn’t defend Mattes. I took the sarden assignment.
Pox rot it, I hate this. I hate lying. Pretending nothing’s wrong. So I’ve lost my sarden edge. I’ve slipped up, if Mattes can read me. Or maybe Mattes has always been this sharp. We’re partners. You don’t throw two Dogs out onto the street and not expect them to know when something’s wrong with their partner.
I don’t like to think about what Mattes would have done in my place. If he would have defended me instead of just accepting the job.
Angry and brooding. That describes Mattes right now. With his eyes trying to slip knives into my back, I feel like scummer.
Ox’s eggs, I think my hill barbarian partner’s got the right of it.
