Title- The Truth

Pairing- Mattes and Clary

Summary- Clary is really upset after a conversation with Tom. She goes to Mattes for comfort and to tell him what happened. Warnings- Fluffy, Kissing.
It was a strange thing that Mattes was feeling, as he held a sobbing Clary in his arms.
He was not used to his former partner and long time friend crying so hard. He had only seen her like this once before, and that was when her sister had passed away.
Now, standing outside the Mantel and Pullet, where she had come to find him eating alone, he held her close to himself.
“Clary. Please tell me what’s wrong.” he murmured.
Clary sniffed and managed to slow her sobs enough to look up and him. “I was talking to Tom yesterday. He was just joking around, and he asked me who the most important man in my life was. I didn’t even think about it, I said you.” she sniffed again in obvious discomfort, then continued, “He thought I was just joking, but I thought about it, and I told him no. I told him it was the truth. He got mad, asked me if I loved you more, and I said yes. I said yes because it’s the truth, and I couldn’t lie to him.” she told him in a quiet murmur, not looking him in the eyes. “He packed up all his things yesterday and left, said we were over, and I didn’t stop him, because I knew you were the one I loved more, and I couldn’t let him think that it was him.” she broke out sobbing again then, and buried her face in his chest.
Shocked into silence Mattes thought about what she had just told him as he gently rubbed her hair and murmured calming words. Finally, he managed to pull away from her and get her to meet his eyes.
“You may not believe me Clary, but I speak the truth when I tell you that you have always been the one I love.” he murmured.
Clary starred back at his with eyes open wide in shock. She had no words for this, so she simply pressed her lips to his.
They kissed for what seemed like a lifetime, acknowledging for the first time what they really meant to each other. When they finally pulled away, Mattes hugged her close. “I love you, Clary.” he whispered.
With her eyes closed contently, Clary smiled. “I love you too.”
